Spring Cleaning Tip #1 – Safety First
While we are looking at how to clean our home we want to start with ensuring our home is safe for our families. Start by changing the batteries on your smoke detectors in your home and testing to ensure that all your smoke detectors are working properly. While you’re at it grab some extra batteries and change them in your alarm clock. It’s common to have your power knocked out during those spring showers so this will ensure you’re not sleeping through your alarm clock! Finally if you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen check to ensure it’s still fully charged and safe to use. If you haven’t got one in your home now is a great time to pick one up. Most of the time you’ll never need it but you’ll be glad you have it when you do! You can buy one for can buy one from Canadian Tire for about $20.
Spring Cleaning Tip #2 – Air Quality
The average Canadian spends 90% of their time indoors. This means the cleanliness of the air in our home is very important especially for asthmatics or allergy sufferers. When spring cleaning one of the key things you can do is change your furnace filter. With all the pollen in the plants about to be released into the air spring is a great time to change your filter. Be sure to look for a filter that is specially designed to trap allergens and dust.Tired Yet? Click Here For Some Help
Spring Cleaning Tip #3 – Floor Mats
What hasn’t been tracked on these floor saving coverings throughout the winter? Water, salt, sand and who knows what else has been ground into these mats from our winter boots. Now is the time to get these mats refreshed and ready for spring. The best way to clean these stubborn mats is to take them outside. Wait for a warmer day and lay the mat out on the patio or driveway (or sidewalk if you have neither!). Shake the mat thoroughly to remove as much of the loose dirt as possible. Then take a vacuum and run it across the top. Lastly take a stiff sponge and a bucket of water with a touch of your favourite all purpose green cleaner and scrub out any stubborn salt stains. If you’re short on cleaning supplies a touch of dish soap in a bucket of water can also be used in a pinch!
With the house made safer, the air cleaner and your entrance ways cleaned up you’re well on your way to getting your spring cleaning wrapped up.
